The Ballerina in the Box

The Ballerina in the Box
by Thomas V. Seminara
illus. by Naomi Malka Litzenblatt
Language: English
TomNao Books, 2017.
43 p. : col. ill. ; cm.
ISBN: 099767251X ; 9780997672510
Summary: Have you ever dreamed of becoming a Prima Ballerina assoluta? Dancing so gracefully that you float across the stage in a whirl of white light and sparkling elegance. That is the dream of Povik, the town's music box maker, to see the dreams of would-be ballerinas come to life when they open the special boxes he creates with love. Stricken with polio at an early age, Povik works his personal brand of magic bringing to life each of his tiny ballerinas. Carefully choosing every exquisite detail, Povik knows that something special awaits both the ballerina in the box and the new owner she dances for. But for one special ballerina in the box, Julianna, the magic is in the inspiration she brings to a very special dancer, Nikolai. For a boy, the challenges of becoming a ballerino or danseur as known in France, can bring the dream to a sad end. After all, boys aren't supposed to like ballet, are they? But through the support of a loving family and Povik's beautiful ballerina in the box, Nikolai learns that dreams can come true, whether you are a girl or boy. Once again Thomas V. Seminara, author of The Boy and The Yellow Cheese and I Like Hot Dogs, joins with the amazing artistic talents of illustrator, Naomi Malka Litzenblatt to create a story that is inspiring and conveys a message of love and acceptance. With The Ballerina in The Box, Seminara shows us how dedication and believing in yourself can lead to great achievement, even when other people want to keep you boxed in.

L'arc en ciel des familles

L'arc en ciel des familles
written and illustrated by Muriel Douru
Language: French
Dunkerque : Ailes sur un tracteur, 2014.
1 vol. ; 21 cm.
ISBN: 9791090286153

Language: English
CreateSpace, 2016.
28 p. : col. ill. ; cm.
ISBN: 1540741311 ; 9781540741318
Summary: Have you ever wondered what would make a child blissfully happy? Children are our joy, but what is it that makes them happy? It's no secret that kids are happy in loving families and with good parents, but how do you define a good parent? As slender or chubby? Tall or short? Do they prefer cooking or football, or maybe fixing things? Does any of it matter, if they love their children, take care of them, teach them, encourage them, and make them feel like they're so happy they could fly? These are some of the questions that this book for children raises and answers at the same time, with the tale of Becker McBeth, a happy little girl. She loves to laugh and play, and she does it every day, just as she does her chores, proud to be big enough to dress herself, make breakfast, and help around the house. She can't wait to become big enough to walk her dog Biser all on her own, too, but until then, she's perfectly happy to walk him with the help of her loving parents - her two dads. And she wouldn't change her family for anything in the world. "I'm a Girl with Two Dads, and I Love It That Way" is a wonderful book about a blissfully happy child loved by her parents, a girl who wants all the kids in the world to be free to dream, to have as loving families as she does, and to understand that the best family in the world is the one that loves you, no matter what they look like on the outside.

Summary: Join a lovable group of children in a delightful romp through an explanation of diversity, understanding it better, encouraging them to be compassionate towards others, regardless of who they are. Many kids today face bullying from their peers based on differences in race, gender, sexual orientation or gender identity. In a world where bullying and intolerance of diversity is becoming increasingly a problem, it's important to teach children - and adults - compassion for others. This book was written to inspire kids (and the adults who read it with kids) who are bullied for being different without focusing too strongly on the bullying angle. Christina Engela is an author and long-time human rights activist with experience in dealing with various types of bullying.

Summary: Families come in all shapes, sizes, and configurations. It is important for us to let children feel great about the uniqueness of their own family and also to teach them to be accepting and respectful of those they may experience as “different.” As our world becomes more and more diverse, there has never been a better, or a more important time, for us to learn to live together and to teach children about diversity and acceptance. As children become aware of family structures that may be different than their own, they may ask questions. They might ask, “Why does Jimmy have two mommies?” or “Can someone have two daddies?” Young children are concrete thinkers and they are not looking for a philosophical response. They don’t need a full discussion on sexual orientation. Typically when a young child asks a question, he is looking for a simple “yes” or “no” response. Children’s awareness of family, whether their own or someone else’s, is a perfect opportunity to teach them about celebrating family, accepting diversity and having open discussions. Children will thrive and learn when they come to understand that not only are all families different but that all families have something in common. It’s love and support that makes a family a family. Families…Sometimes was written to help parents and caregivers talk to their children about diversity and acceptance. Using a book is a good way to help start a conversation or to help you continue one your child may have already started. Since young children form ideas about themselves and others in the early school years, it is important to begin to teach tolerance and anti-bias lessons early. Ultimately, we want to raise children who appreciate, rather than fear differences.

Summary: This book is intended for all parents, grandparents, educators and anyone who has ever loved a child. Growing up is hard under the best of circumstances, but when you don’t feel like you belong in your own skin, the battle is one that lasts 24/7 unless someone intervenes and says…” You’re okay just the way you are and your feelings matter to me.” The first step in understanding the whole issue of gender identity is removing our bias, shutting our mouths, opening our ears and listening to what the child has to say. Jack Wants to Be Jill is a simple story that introduces the transgender subject to younger children in a way that is non-judgmental and compassionate. Everyone deserves to be true to themselves and it needs to start in our own homes.
